At a fictional residents' meeting, Aisha argues against turning a small car park into a temporary weekend play space. She worries that deliveries will block nearby streets and that older residents will lose convenient access to the building. Her comments are clear enough to appear in the meeting notes as a firm rejection of the proposal.

A week later, the organisers share a revised plan. It preserves an access lane, limits the trial to Saturday afternoons, and arranges deliveries before the activity begins. Aisha visits the site with a neighbour who uses the entrance daily. They identify a remaining problem with the proposed signs, which the organisers agree to address before any trial starts.

Aisha now thinks a limited trial could be reasonable. Yet she hesitates to say so in the group chat. She worries that neighbours will interpret the change as weakness or assume that her original concerns were invented. Remaining consistent would be socially easier, even though the proposal she first opposed no longer exists in exactly the same form.

Instead of quietly switching sides, she writes a short explanation. She names the concerns she raised, identifies the changes that address them, and states the condition that remains: clear signs must be installed first. She supports one trial, not an indefinite arrangement. She also asks for a review that includes residents who do not use the play space.

Some neighbours welcome the explanation; others still disagree with her conclusion. One person asks why she did not support the idea from the beginning. Aisha replies that the access plan was different then. Changing her conclusion does not require pretending that the earlier version was acceptable, or that the new version carries no uncertainty.

For Aisha, the consistent part is her attention to access and shared use, not a permanently fixed yes or no. She learns that a public change of mind can be accountable when the reasons are visible. The aim is not to celebrate every reversal, but to make it possible for better information to improve a decision.

supports…not…

I support a trial, not a permanent change at this stage.

does not require pretending…

Changing my view does not require pretending that my earlier concerns were false.
