In a fictional library renovation meeting, two chairs are placed beside the entrance. One is light, inexpensive, and easy to stack. The other has arms, a firmer back, and a wider seat. The organisers ask visitors to vote for the “better chair,” expecting the results to settle the purchase quickly and without argument.

Instead, the comments point in different directions. A volunteer who moves furniture between events prefers the lighter chair. A visitor who finds standing up difficult values the arms on the heavier one. Someone who reads for long periods asks to try both for more than a minute. These responses are not necessarily inconsistent; they answer different questions.

The project coordinator rewrites the task. Rather than search for an overall winner immediately, the group lists the situations in which the chairs will be used. A crowded workshop requires easy movement and storage. A quiet reading corner calls for comfortable longer stays. The entrance needs a place where someone can sit down briefly and get up safely.

Some criteria can be measured directly, such as weight, price, and available floor space. Others require people to explain their experience. “Comfortable” is not a meaningless word, but it becomes more useful when someone describes which part supports them and during which activity. Turning every response into a single score would hide some of these distinctions.

The budget cannot cover every preference, so the group buys a smaller mixture of chairs and keeps some existing ones temporarily. This compromise does not satisfy everyone equally. However, the coordinator publishes the reasons and invites feedback after a month of use. The decision becomes something the library can learn from, rather than a contest that declares some visitors wrong.

The lesson is not that comparison is impossible. It is that “better” needs a purpose, a user, and a set of constraints. Once those are visible, disagreement can reveal information that a simple vote would otherwise conceal. A useful judgement may sound less confident precisely because it tells us when it applies.

not necessarily inconsistent

The comments are not necessarily inconsistent; they concern different uses.

precisely because

The answer is useful precisely because it states its limits.

criterion

Cost is one criterion, but comfort also matters.

inconsistent

Their answers are not inconsistent if their needs differ.

constraint

The room size is an important constraint.

compromise

We reached a compromise on the number of chairs.

conceal

A single score can conceal different experiences.
