After a difficult rehearsal, violin student Grace calls her friend Max. She says she lost her place in the music and felt embarrassed. Max immediately recommends a practice schedule, a new music stand, and several ways to mark the difficult passages. He is trying hard to be useful.

Grace replies with shorter and shorter answers. Max assumes she dislikes his suggestions and offers even more. Finally, she says, “I know I need to practise. I just wanted to tell someone how awful this afternoon felt.” The silence that follows is uncomfortable, but it also makes the misunderstanding clear.

Max apologises for moving too quickly into solutions. He asks whether she would prefer him to listen or help think through what happened. Grace chooses to talk first. As she describes the rehearsal, she realises that losing her place was less upsetting than believing she had disappointed the other musicians.

Later, Grace asks Max to help her write a message to the group leader. They work on two clear questions about the next rehearsal. The practical advice is useful now because it responds to something she has chosen to work on, rather than a problem Max has selected for her.

Max does not stop offering ideas to friends. He simply checks what kind of conversation they want before offering a plan. Sometimes the most helpful first step is a question, not a solution.

would prefer…or…

Would you prefer me to listen or help you make a plan?

less…than…

The mistake was less upsetting than the reaction afterwards.
