When the residents of a shared house plan dinner, Oliver suggests using a delivery app. “It will save everyone time,” he writes. The others agree, and he sends them a link to a restaurant with a large menu. He feels pleased that the decision has taken less than a minute.

Over the next hour, the group chat fills with questions. One person cannot find suitable food; another needs the ingredients checked. Someone must collect the choices, calculate the shared delivery charge, and wait near the front door. Leila quietly does most of this while Oliver finishes his work upstairs.

At dinner, Oliver says the app was very convenient. Leila agrees that it helped them order, but explains how much organising was still necessary. She is not asking to ban deliveries. She wants the house to notice the work behind a choice that appears effortless to the person who suggests it.

For their next shared meal, they choose from two restaurants with clear menus. The person proposing delivery also manages the order, unless somebody volunteers to swap tasks. They agree on a time for sending choices. If a resident misses it, they can make their own arrangement without delaying the group.

Oliver still values tools that save time. He has simply added two words to his favourite question. Instead of asking only, “Does this save time?”, he asks, “Does this save time, and for whom?”

unless

I will manage the order unless someone wants to swap tasks.

appear + adjective

The process appears simple from the outside.
