Ben is learning to cook with his friend Sara. He tries a new soup and asks, “Is it good?” Sara says yes, but Ben is not sure what to do next time. He wants to improve, and one short answer gives him little direction.

Sara suggests a different question. “You could ask about the salt, the vegetables, or the cooking time.” Ben tastes the soup again. “Are the carrots too hard?” he asks. Now Sara can explain exactly what she thinks and show him a softer piece.

The next week, Ben cuts the carrots into smaller pieces. He also keeps a note of the cooking time. When Sara arrives, he asks her to compare the carrots with last week's soup. Their conversation is longer and more useful this time.

Ben still asks broad questions sometimes. They can start a conversation. But when he needs help with a decision, he now asks about one clear part of the problem.

too + adjective

Are these instructions too long?

ask about

询问某个话题用 ask about;请求对方做事则用 ask someone to do。

I asked about the timing and asked Sara to taste the soup.
