修伞人的未完成清单

On her first day assisting an umbrella repairer, Mara notices two lists above the workbench. One records completed repairs. The other, headed “Not yet solved,” contains descriptions of difficult faults, crossed-out ideas, and questions. She assumes that the second list is temporary and that an experienced craftsperson would eventually make it disappear.

玛拉第一天给修伞师傅当助手时，注意到工作台上方有两张清单。一张记录已完成的修理，另一张标题是“尚未解决”，写着疑难故障、划掉的想法和问题。她以为第二张只是暂时的，经验丰富的手艺人最终会让它消失。

A customer brings in an umbrella that belonged to his late sister. Its fabric is faded, and a joint has broken in an unusual place. He asks whether it can be made “as good as new.” Mara is eager to reassure him. Before she answers, the repairer asks what the customer most wants to preserve.

一位顾客带来已故姐姐留下的伞。伞布已经褪色，一个连接处在少见的位置断了。他问能否修得“像新的一样”。玛拉急着让他安心。她还没回答，师傅就先问顾客最想保留的是什么。

The customer explains that he wants to display it in his hallway, not use it in heavy rain. This changes the task. A replacement frame might make it functional, but it would remove several original parts. A discreet support could preserve more of the object while leaving it unsuitable for everyday use. Neither option restores the past.

顾客解释，他想把伞展示在自家走廊，并非在大雨中使用。这改变了任务。换伞架可能恢复功能，却要去掉好几个原零件。一个不显眼的支撑或许能保留更多原物，但仍不适合日常使用。两种方式都无法恢复过去。

The repairer describes these choices carefully and declines to guarantee an invisible repair. Mara worries that this honesty will lose them the job. Instead, the customer asks for time to consider the display option. He thanks them for explaining what would change, rather than simply promising to make the umbrella look new.

师傅仔细说明这些选择，并拒绝保证修补完全看不出来。玛拉担心这么诚实会让他们丢掉这单生意。顾客却说想花点时间考虑展示方案。他感谢他们解释哪些地方会改变，而不是简单保证把伞修得像新的一样。

Later, Mara asks about the unfinished list. The repairer says some entries are reminders to seek advice; others mark the limits of a method. Keeping them visible prevents yesterday's confident guess from becoming today's unquestioned rule. A question left open is not automatically a failure, provided that the uncertainty is explained to anyone relying on the answer.

后来，玛拉问起未完成清单。师傅说，有些条目提醒他去请教，有些标示某种方法的局限。把它们摆在眼前，能避免昨天自信的猜测变成今天未经质疑的规则。只要向依赖答案的人说明不确定性，问题暂时没有答案并不自动等于失败。

Mara adds a note beside her own practice repairs: “Ask what success means before choosing a method.” She still wants to become skilled enough to solve difficult problems. But she begins to understand that expertise also involves describing limits precisely, so that customers can make decisions with a clearer picture of what is possible.

玛拉在自己的练习维修记录旁写下：“选择方法前，先问怎样才算成功。”她仍希望练就足够本领，解决难题。但她开始理解，专业还意味着准确说明局限，让顾客更清楚地了解可能实现的结果，再做决定。

An estimate can be useful, provided that its limits are clear.
