Nora volunteers to plan a neighbourhood walk for six residents, including her uncle, who uses a walking stick. A mapping app offers a route to a riverside café and labels it the fastest. The blue line looks reassuringly simple. Nora sends everyone a screenshot before checking the streets herself.
On Saturday morning, the group discovers a steep staircase halfway along the route. The app has not made an obvious calculation error: the café really is closer this way. Yet distance is only one part of their journey. They also need places to rest, safe crossings, and a path everyone can manage comfortably.
A bakery owner suggests going around a small park. Her alternative takes longer but includes benches and a gradual slope. She also warns them that a delivery van sometimes blocks the narrow pavement near the café. This knowledge is practical and specific, although it depends on her experience rather than a complete view of the area.
Over coffee, Nora resists the easy conclusion that digital maps are useless. The app helped her find the destination and estimate the basic distance. The problem was the question she effectively asked it: “What is fastest?” She had assumed that the answer also meant “What is most suitable for this particular group?”
For the next walk, Nora combines several sources. She checks the map, walks unfamiliar sections in advance, and asks participants what might make the journey difficult. Her route note distinguishes confirmed details from things that may change. It says where the benches are, but does not promise that every pavement will always be clear.
The revised plan is less elegant than a single blue line, and it takes more effort to prepare. It is also more honest about uncertainty. Nora now treats a recommendation as a starting point for judgement. Before following it, she asks whose needs the recommendation was designed to serve, and which needs remain invisible.
The problem was…
The problem was the assumption that speed mattered most.
Her advice was useful, although it reflected only her own experience.
