At a community workshop, Sam sets a small robot arm beside his grandmother's paper birds. The machine is part of his student project. He has programmed it to fold a square sheet in several careful steps. He hopes it will make the demonstration easier for visitors to follow.
The first few birds look almost identical. Their wings meet neatly, and their noses point in the same direction. A visitor asks whether the robot will replace the people at the table. Sam starts to answer yes, then notices that his grandmother is smiling at a rather crooked bird.
“A little girl made this one for her brother,” she explains. “She wanted one wing to look like his injured arm.” Sam looks again. What seemed like a mistake was actually a choice. The bird carries a meaning that his original instructions could not have predicted.
For the afternoon session, Sam changes the activity. The robot prepares the first simple folds, and visitors finish their own designs. Some add long tails; others draw faces. His grandmother helps people turn their ideas into shapes, while Sam explains how the machine follows its instructions.
By closing time, the table is less tidy than before, but the conversation is livelier. Sam photographs the different birds for his project. He still values accurate folding. Now, however, he has another question to ask: accurate for which purpose, and useful to whom?
What seemed like…was…
What seemed like a delay was actually useful thinking time.
