At a small birthday dinner, Eva gives her friend Jun a gift in a blue box. Jun thanks her warmly and puts the box on a nearby table. Eva looks at it several times. She wonders whether he dislikes the gift.
In Eva's family, people usually open presents immediately so everyone can share the happy moment. In Jun's family, people often wait until guests leave. Jun thinks opening the box now might interrupt the conversation. Neither friend has explained this before.
Finally, Eva asks, "Would you like to open it now, or later?" Jun smiles and says, "Now is fine! I did not know you wanted to watch." Inside is a notebook with a drawing of his favorite mountain.
Jun loves the notebook and starts talking about his last hiking trip. Eva feels relieved. Their different habits were not signs of coldness or bad manners. A small question helped them understand each other better than a long, silent guess.
