During an online conversation, a friend asks Yan to describe her hometown. Yan first reaches for familiar words: beautiful streets, friendly people and delicious food. Then she looks at a photograph of a family lunch and chooses a smaller starting point. She describes the path from her grandparents' flat to a nearby vegetable market, where she used to help carry tomatoes home. Her listener now has a route to imagine and a person to follow, rather than a list of general compliments.
The meal in the photograph includes fanqie chao dan, stir-fried tomatoes and eggs. Yan keeps the Chinese name, then explains the ingredients and the way her family prepares it. There is no need to invent an impressive English dish name or assume that the listener already knows the Chinese one. She says the tomatoes become soft and slightly sweet, while the eggs stay tender. These details describe what the food is like without claiming that one family's version is the only correct recipe.
Yan remembers that her grandfather liked more tomato sauce, so the family often served the dish over rice. She begins with 'In my family' rather than 'Everyone in my hometown'. Her cousin, who lives nearby, prefers a less juicy version. The difference does not need to become a debate about authenticity. It is a chance to show how familiar food can vary between households and how a personal memory can be meaningful without representing an entire city or region.
她用 In my family 开头,而不是 Everyone in my hometown。
Her friend responds with a story about a simple meal from his own childhood. Yan asks which ingredient he would find hardest to replace. The conversation has moved beyond asking whether one cuisine is better than another. Both speakers are explaining experiences the other person can recognise: shopping with family, having a favourite texture and remembering someone through a meal. Yan still calls her hometown beautiful, but now the word rests on a scene her friend can picture and discuss.
