At her school's reading club, Yue usually listened while others discussed the weekly story. She understood many sentences on the page, but answering immediately felt difficult. One afternoon, the club organiser invited her to lead the opening activity next week. Yue agreed to prepare one question, rather than trying to host the whole meeting.
She first wrote, 'Please analyse the character's entire journey.' Then she imagined being asked that question without preparation. She changed it to, 'Which choice would you make differently, and why?' Members could point to one moment in the story. She also prepared a simple follow-up: 'Could you give us an example from the text?'
At the meeting, nobody answered at once. Yue nearly supplied her own answer, but she waited and invited everyone to think for a moment. A quiet member finally shared an idea. When Yue missed part of it, she said, 'Could you repeat the last sentence?' Asking again helped her respond to the actual idea instead of guessing.
Afterwards, Yue noticed that she had spoken less than she expected, yet the group had discussed several different choices. She wrote down two phrases to practise before the next meeting. Hosting had not made her suddenly fluent. It had given her a manageable way to listen, ask and take part, one exchange at a time.
Which choice would you make differently?
Which choice would you make differently, and why?
Could you repeat...? 指明 the last sentence 比只说 again 更方便对方回应。
Could you repeat the last sentence, please?
