过去完成时：过去的某一刻之前
用 had + 过去分词理清两件过去事情的先后。

When I arrived, the train had left 表示到达时列车已经离开。arrived 是过去的参照点，had left 是在它之前完成的事。不要把“很久以前”直接等同于过去完成时。
The meeting had started when we arrived.
我们到的时候，会议已经开始了。
She had finished the task before lunch.
午饭前她已经完成了任务。
先建立时间线，再选择是否需要强调更早
两个动作按顺序叙述时，一般过去时常已足够；过去完成时能明确回看此前事件。had 不随主语变化，否定为 had not，问句可把 had 前移。
I had not seen the message when she called.
她打电话时，我还没看到那条消息。
Had they booked the tickets before they left?
他们出发前订好票了吗？
