You propose a monthly repair afternoon at a community centre. A neighbour worries that volunteers may accept tasks beyond their skills. A weak response would describe the neighbour as someone who dislikes helping people. A fair response recognises the actual concern: an enthusiastic event still needs clear limits on what it offers.
“One reasonable objection is that a volunteer repair event could create false confidence about difficult jobs. That concern should shape the plan. We could limit the first session to simple clothing repairs, explain that volunteers may decline a task, and invite participants to observe the process. More specialised requests would need a suitable professional.”
Avoid inventing an extreme position that is easy to defeat, such as “Some people think neighbours should never help each other.” Unless someone has actually argued that, you have changed the disagreement. Restate the objection in language its supporter could recognise before explaining where you agree and where your conclusion differs.
A counterargument is not merely a paragraph to defeat before repeating your original plan. It may reveal a necessary revision. You can conclude, “With these limits, I support a small trial rather than a full repair service. We should review the tasks we declined as well as the ones we completed.”
One reasonable objection is that…
One reasonable objection is that the task may exceed our experience.
With these limits…
With these limits, I support a small trial.
