Imagine that a friend asks what you want to do on Sunday. “Anything is fine” is polite, but it does not help if you have a real preference. Try naming the activity: “I would prefer a walk by the river because I want some time outdoors.”

A: Would you prefer a walk or a film? B: I would prefer a walk. I have been indoors all week. A: I like that idea, but the weather may be wet. B: We could choose a short route near a café and stop there if it rains.

Notice that the speaker gives a personal reason, not a rule for everyone. “I want some time outdoors” explains a need. It does not mean that watching a film is bad. You can also say, “For me, a quiet place would be easier after a busy week.”

Finish by inviting a response: “How does that sound?” or “What would you prefer?” If your friend has a different need, suggest one small change. A useful preference helps people plan together; it does not close the conversation.

would prefer + noun / to do

比较两个名词常用 prefer A to B。

I would prefer to meet in the morning.

How does that sound?

We could meet near the café. How does that sound?
